FIRE AT MERCER
DISASTROUS OUTBREAK. SEVERAL BUILDINGS DESTROYED (By Telegraph—Press Association) ; MERCER, This Day. The most destructive fire in the history of Mercer broke out at 5.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon, when the Post Office, tho Railway Social' Hall, two private residences and a shed were burned to the ground. • Following are details of the buildings destroyed:—
Post office, a one-storeyed wooden building in the Great South Road, op* posite the Mercer Hotel. Railway Social Hall, a one-storeyed wooden building, next to post office. House of fire rooms, built of wood, owned by Mr J. Murray, of Pukekawa, and occupied by Mr J. Barron, next to the social hall. House of five rooms, built of wood, owned by the Post and Telegraph Department, and occupied by Mr William Plough, railway porter, on the other side of the post office. A wooden shed, next to Mr Plough’s house. Fortunately the furniture from both houses was saved. The outbreak started in the post office.
