The flag controversy took a fresh turn to-day, when, following a powerful appeal by prominent oppositionists, the Government accepted an adjournment of the second reading of the debate to allow another attempt to be made to reach an agreement. NEW YORK, Oct. 19,
A despatch to the “El Continental,” a Spanish language newspaper in El Paso, Texas, declared that a train carrying members of the Calles family was . dynamited between Villa Reyes and Javal de Britto, south bf San Lius Potosi.
The despatch said the dynamite was placed beneath a coach near the front of the train. Six persons were killed and seven injured. The engine was derailed. * The relatives of Calles escaped. ' HELD FOR RANSOM BANDITS IN MEXICO. v FIVE THOUSAND PESOS DEMANDED. MEXICO CITY, Oct. 19. W. E. Mitchell, a British subject, who is manager of a copper mine, is being held for ransom by bandits at Nayarit. They threaten to shoot him in five days’ time unless they are paid five thousand pesos. MELBOURNE, this day. A fire atiPort Melbourne trapped the families, Edwards and Savages, numbering eight persons. Mrs * Edwards, while trying to escape downstairs, was badly burned. All escaped in their night clothes to the roof and thence to safety, carrying the injured woman, who later succumbed to her burns. THE COLORADO STRIKE NOT EXTENDING GREATLY. NEW YORK, pet.. 19, Although six thousand Colorado coal miners, affiliated with the Industrial Workers of the World, Rave responded to the latter’s strike order, only part of the State’s coalfields are yet seri>, ously affected. Governor Adams declared there was nothing at present in the situation to cause anxiety, but he was prepared to act if ap emergency arises. The strikers seek more, pay and shorter hours. United miffe workers, although in a minority in most fields, denounced the strike and attempted to carry on theit usual duties. Meantime the strikers arc faced with an ultimatum from the State and county authorities that all pickets would be arrested because the strike call was illegal. BARRY AND GOODSELL RETURN MATCH WANTED. VANCOUVER, Oct. 19. Barry has challenged Goodsell to a return match at Vancouver on. May -~ next year, and has deposited 500 ' dollars. ADELAIDE, Oct. 19. The Secretary of State for the Dominions, Mr L. S. Amcry, has arrived at Port Augusta from Western Australia. He displayed much interest in outback problems, and asked a number of searching questions, which showed that he has already made a keen study of the potentialities of Australia. NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS MATCH AT SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Oct. 19. The New Zealand cricketers have arrived at Fremantle in the Otranto, on their way home. The team will play N'vv Smith Wales on October 28.
