RADIO NEWS

(By “Broadcast.”)

NOTES.

At last the Powers that be have given us a sample of super-power. Last evening- (Saturday) we listened to the Right Hon. the Prime Minister of New Zealand officially open 2YA. The evening was all that could be desired from a receiving point of view, absolutely no atmospherics in the ether. Anyone who picked up “static” should have their set overhauled, and sec that the batteries are full of “pep.”

The station was also successfully broadcast by station 3YA. “Broadcast” tried out a Eola cone speaker during the Wellington initial transmission, and found that the reproduction was all that anyone could possibly desire. Every inflection, every sound in the studio, was .faithfully reproduced. Troubled with the necessity of replacing “B” batteries for his set, “Broadcast” obtained a “B” eliminator. This device functions from the ordinary electric light and power system, and proved very satisfactory indeed, and gave no noticeable rectification hum in operation. The power used was negligible, and “Broadcast” recommends this form of “anode or plate” power for those who desire freedom from battery replacement. A very efficient method of recharging one’s accumulator is the use of a rectifier. Rectifiers have attained a high degree of perfection and efficiency. An instrument known as a hydrometer is used to test the accumulator. Rectifiers cost from £3 10/ upwards. The amount, of electricity used is fractional. This method removes the necessity of taking the battery to a charging station, and so causes no delay to listeners-in.
