FOOTBALL

THE WAIKATO UNION. "ANNUAL REPORT. The. following is the annual report of the Waikato Rugby Union to. be presented at the annual meeting this month: — The standard of play .has been of a very high order and the matches well fought, and in keeping with the highest tradition of the code. The hold the game has oh the rising generation and the public in general indicates that if given good clean and fast football no fear need be entertained that Rugby in the Waikato will go back.

During the season the following representative fixtures were played: — July 31: Thames Valley at Paeroa, won 31 to (5; August. 21: North Auckland at Hamilton., won 20 to 13; Sept-. 4: •r ••• | . r Thames 'Valley at Morrinsville, won 39 to ">; Sept. 15: Taranaki a-t Hamilton, iosi 12 to 0; Sept. .18: Auckland at Auckland, lost 1(5 to 9; Sept. 29: Hawke’s Bay at Hamilton, won 22 'to d; Oct. (5: King Country at Taumaru-

nui, won .12 to 3. An East and West match was also •played at Hamilton on July 17. This' was ;r good match add was well ‘worth while, and we would suggest that this match be an annual fixture, if possible to be played before any of the representative matches. You will notice that the second Thames Valley match was played at Morrinsville. This turned out fairly satisfactorily and we would also suggest that when funds will permit some

f your fixtures be played away from Hamilton so as to encourage football in your sub-union centres, and to give those, who cannot travel a chance of seeing good football.

I am sorry to say_tli:tt. Mr Dave Mitchell has notified me that he will be unable to continue on as our secretary owing to his time being so fully taken up with his other work —this will be- a loss to the union. During the three years Mr Mitchell has held office we have been free from worry, well knowing that things were in good and capable hands. His place will be hard to fill, and we one and all wish to express our appreciation of the work he has. done during his term of office. Finance: The balance sheet attached shows in detail the result of the vear’s

operations. The thanks and appreciation of the Waikato Union, public and players are due to the Waikato Referees’ Association for the able referees who have so capably controlled the games, and for their assistance and co-operation during the season. Our thanks are also due to the Hamilton Union for the use of their grounds, changing sheds, etc., at the Rugby Park on five occasions, two Saturdays and three mid-week days, and for the assistance given by their officials at those matches special thanks are due.

For the management committee, Thos. A. Cooper, President. The statement of receipts and expenditure showed that the year commenced with a cash balance of £1 13/ and concluded with a credit of £5 11/8. Assets totalled £24 10/4 and liabilities £22,1.1/. A-qHll
