Hop-picking is now in full swing in the 'Nelson district: (states the Evening Mail). As on instance of the abundance of the crop .the paper; is reliably informed that two young ladies in a Wai-iti garden arc each picking SO bushels a day. Fourteen bins in the garden picked 835 bushels in one day —an average of nearly 00 bushels a bin. During the discussion at the Waipawa Hospital Board’s meeting, jn Waipukurau it was stated that certain carpets in the new nurses’ home cost £SOO. It. was also mentioned that the extensive furnishing in the home costs, the ratepayers not one penny, the whole being met by voluntary contributions and the board itself. All sorts of conjectures are made in regard to the future of fertilisers, the prevalent view being that the farmers in the Waikato will sooner or later have to pay for their present good fortune in getting supplies below the admitted cost of the production. Mr C. E. Macmillan, M.P. for Taurangn, takes a somewhat cheerful view of the future. Speaking at the opening of the .Matamata A. and P. Show, Mr Macmillan voiced the opinion that whatever happened in the future the position could never revert to what it. had been, and that the farmers would reap some permanent advantage. i ‘‘lf I were offered my choice between a trip to England and a trip to New Zealand I would unhesitatingly choose New Zealand. It is the finest country in .the world.” Thus spoke Mr Hugh .Trumble, the well-known, exinternational cricketer, when he was leaving Dunedin last week. Mr Trumble, who is manager of the Melbourne Cricket Club’s team, has travelled extensively on cricket tours. He expressed to Warwick Armstrong, captain of the team, and another famous player, the hope that before they both dropped out of tlie game altogether they would be able, to organise another trip to the Dominion.
