COUNCIL MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS. ' The ordinary monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr T. F. 'Richards), Crs H. Alan Bell, L. M. Morrin, P. T. Glanville, M. Wells, W. Moore, .E. C. Wallis. Municipal Band. Four letters were received from the band secretary ,(f) ashing that Mr A. Garland, Leamington, be appointed to inspect the band*instrumcnts; (2) requesting that the council grant a subsidy of £IOO, seeing that the band intended to compete at the next contest; (3) ashing for a heater to be installed |at the band room; (4) expressing appreciation of Cr Glanville’s services as a member of the Band Committee. Cr Glanville presented the annual report' and .balance sheet from the band, showing that the general.account was in credit to the amount of 7 £75 10/6, while in the No. 2 account (carnival fund) there was £27 19/S to credit. * Cr Glanville said the band had placed £3O of. its earning to a* replacement fund. The band was now an asset to the borough, and the personnel of the band could not be better. The chairman of the committee (Mr W. White) was a good business manager. The speaker supported all the requests of the band, and urged that the grant for next year be increased to £IOO. The money would not be called, on if not absolutely required. The .Mayor complemented the band on the improvement of its finances, and also on its progress in efficiency.. Personally, said the Mayor, he doubted whether the band was wise in putting rqoncy to reserve fund at present—it was premature, especially seeing that the band would soon require a bandroom. ' The council agreed to Mr Garland’s appointment as suggested, and requested the engineer to report re putting a heater in the band-room; the matter of subsidy to be left over till the estimates were considered.

The band’s appreciation of Cr Glanville’s services was received by the council with pleasure. The band report ed balance sheet were adopted, the Mayor expressing pleasure at the explicit statement given. Use of Square. The Cambridge Rugby Union asked for improvements to a muddy portion of Victoria Square; also that the cut: ranee to Dick Street be closed and an entrance be provided from Queen Street. v The council instructed its engineer to effect the improvement to the ground, but declined to make the alterations re entrances as requested. < Tbwn Clock. A letter was received from H. Howden, stating that the towh clock’s striking apparatus was much out of repair.—Received. - Town Hall Bent. An application was received from the District High School Committee for a reduction in the rental of the Town Hall for a function shortly to be held in aid of the school funds. The Town Clerk pointed out that the Auditor-General had notified that in future any such concessions would be treated as donations by the council, and deducted from the amounts allowed for unauthorised expenditure. The request was not acceded to, on this account. Moreover several speakers thought the school efforts had been well patronised, and this was not a case for special consideration. Balance Sheet. Th( i balance i-dieet for the year 19241923 was received from the AuditorGeneral, duly audited, and it was decided. to have copies of same printed. Te Miro Quarry. The Te Miro Quarry Reserve Committee reported that it had resolved to accede to the Cambridge Road Board’s request for the withdrawal of the council’s application for control of"the Te Miro quarry reserve, provided that the council be reimbursed of the amount already expended on thy reserve. Considerable discussion ensued re the position of the council with regard to the quarry. It was ultimately resolved to write to the Minister for Public Works to ascertain in what body the quarry reserve was vested, and requesting that, seeing that the council hath expended a considerable sum of money in testing the quarry, it should be reimbursed.

It transpired during discussion that :i considerable quantity of gelignite, tools, etc., had been left by workmen in a tunnel at the quarry, and owing to a subsidence of earth, these, had been lost. An attempt had been made to recover these, but it had been rather dangerous, and the council had not been successful. Or Wells was strongly of opinion that the engineer was responsible to the council for this loss.

.Expenditure on Advertising. In reply to enquiry by the council, the Te, Aroha Borough Council Stated that it had not expended money on advertising the town—-this had been done by the Chamber of ConunetfifcV The Rotorno Borough Council had authority by special Act of Parliament to expend money in advertising. . The Mayor stated that the council had entered into a contract for advertising Cambridge, and now the Audi-tor-General said the cost of same could not be paid except out of unauthorised expenditure. He moved that the Herald, be written to, cancelling the contract entered into, for the reason above stated.. This was carried. Heavy Traffic Tees. A report was received of the conference held recently at Hamilton re allocation of heavy traffic license fees. It was stated that in all probability the S.M. would be asked to fix the allocation. —Received. ! -t Miscellaneous. . “ 1 A notice of motion, in Or T. H. Kelly’s name, was not brought forward, the mover being absent. The appointment of a motor inspector was held over until next moving.
