WATER SUPPLY
1 1 THE GRAVITATION SCHEME. A :' TENDER FOR PIPES ACCEPTED. -j~ special meeting of the Borough was held on Thursday evening /to further consider tenders received 3;or the supply and laying of pipes in Connection gravitation water ‘ .supply scheme. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr T. F. Trichords) Crs H. Alan Bell, L. M. Morrin, T. Kelly, M. Wells, G. E. Calvert, W. Moore, P. ,T. Glanville and E. C. IWallis. • The engineer (Mr T. Dix) and cleric :<Mr W. Milburn) were also in attend- ''" ■ anee. n The six tenders were narrowed down to the consideration of those submitted hy the Spiral Pipe Co.. Wanganui, •pipes £19,138 2/5, and laying of same £3224; an,d Duthie Bridson and Co., Auckland, agents for British Mannesman. pipes, to cost as follows: Pipes £19,205 0/5, and laying of same £3917 £/• : - • The Spiral Pipe Co. were agreeable to maintain the line for a period of 12 /%&sths after installation at nojost; to / .the council, the other tenderers providing no guarantee. The Spiral Co. were also prepared to supply the first instal* AVancnt of pipes within 14 days from acceptance of tender and to complete the supply in four months. They guaran- : teed to have the whole work completed in five months. Duthie, Bridson and v Co. ’s tender indicated that if successful, they could guarantee the. whole ■j.apply of pipes from England in six ' Months. • > : -The tenders were discussed at length, the consensus of opinion being in favour of Mannesman pipes, owing to their being a heavier pipe than the Spiral Co.’s. , The engineer recommended the British pipe as the better of the two, although the Spiral product was quite satisfactory and suitable for the Cam* ' bridge scheme. ' ■ ' It might be pointed out for the benefit of % readers that the Spiral, pipe is a riveted one, whjle the Mannesman product .is a solid cast pipe. However, considerable cost is saved with the Spiral pipes in jointing which are bolted upon rubber, while, the Mannesman have to be leaded. His Worship was in favour of accepting the New Zealand made pipe in view-of the saving on the scheme as -indicated by the following:—Spiral Co.’s pipes: Pipes £18,404 19/2; fittings '• laying, etc., £3224; interest, & B/4, “Mannesman Pipes: —Pipes, ’£18,540 4/2; fittings, £604 1(5/3; laying, £3917 2/; interest, £2lO 16/(5. ence in favour of first tender, £956 4/2. His Worship further pointed out that the Co. \s pipes had given satisfaction where installed and the coun- <*."• ’s representfitives had seen them tested up to 3001 b pressure, whereas the pressure they would be called upon to bear from Maungatautari would be Slot more than 1301 b. Other considerations were the facts that the Spiral Co.’s tendef - was the lowest; that by , accepting same the work could be commenced immediately and be completed an five months, thereby saving a considerable amount of interest, and bringing the period for revenue-produc-ing nearer, which . would I‘eflect on the amount of rate to be levied, if necessary. In view of the above His Worship moved, and it 'was seconded by Cr Mornn, that the Spiral Co.’s tentier be accepted. Or Calvert mo'ved as an amendment that Mosers Duthie, Bridson and Co.’s tender be accepted, as the Mannesman avas heavier and stronger. " On being put. to the meeting the amendment was carried, the voting being as follows: For the amendment, €rs ohlvert, Glanville,' Moore, Wells ' Wallis; against, the Mayor and <jfiTMorrin and Kelly. .it} i .
