' A NARROW ESCAPE. CAR DESTROYED. BRAKE FAILS TO HOLD. (By Telegraph- — Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 6. An Auckland motoring party returning from a trip to Taranaki met with an accident, at Mount Messenger this afternoon, resulting in the loss of their car and the narrow escape ,of the driver, Mr S. Ringer. The party were in a large touring ear, and on climbing one of the steep sections on the New Plymouth side of the mountain flames were seen issuing from the car. Two of the occupants, Messrs L. Hardley, the owner, and F. Reid, jumped out to endeavour to suppress the'flames. Mr Ringer pulled; on the brake, which, however, would .niot hold and the car started to go down hill and over the side. Mr Ringer 'managed to jump clear, and the chi’ went hurtling down- to the bottom; of the valley, a sheer drop of 200 ft. With it went all the luggage, which was consumed in the fire that completely destroyed the car. ■, The party had a narrow escape, for had they not got out. in time they must have been dashed to death. They were brought into town by a service bus. BOY’S SKULL FRACTURED, AN UNFORTUNATE FAMILY. , (By Telegraph—Press Association). ASHBURTON, April 6. A boy of 12, Leicester Stoddart, is in hospital in a serious condition, suffering from a fractured skull, as the result of falling from a spring-cart he was driving at Willowby yesterday. He is now only partially conscious.. His father, Mr Leo Stoddart, is at present a patient in hospital and it is only a few months since his mother was killed in a gig .accident at the Ashburton traffic bridge. MOTORING FATALITY. IN THE FAR SOUTH. ONE MAN KILLED. (By Telegraph —Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 7. A shocking motoring accident occurred yesterday afternoon, when a sixcylinder car, owned and driven by Mr Thomas Price, of, Bcnmore," overturned about two miles south of Dipton: There were two other occupants of the ear, Messrs Alexander McKenzie, of Invercargill, and Mr John Murphy, of Fernhills. Mr McKenzie was. killed, it is believed, almost instantaneously, Mr Price was admitted to the Southland Hospital suffering from extensive injuries to the head, his condition being very grave. Mr Murpliy Was able to'return to his home at Fernliills, his injuries.being of a minor nature. MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED. LOSES CONTROL OF MACHINE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIHI, April 6. Mr James F. Collcdge, sen., a wellknown resident of Waihi, when riding motor-cycle lost control of the machine, and was thrown with great force on the metal of the road.
