At a Rotary Club dinner to Mr Massoy at the Hotel Cecil, Lord Mom* proposed the health of New Zealand's Prime Minister, paying a. tribute to his work for the Empire. Mr Massey, in responding, gave the large assemblage some interesting pictures of Maori life in the early days, and spoke of the great advance New Zealand had made during a period of GO years: also its suitableness for British emigration. FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE ALARMING SPREAD AT HOME. CAUSES ENORMOUS LOSS. (By Cable—Press Association). (Received 12 noon). LONDON, Dec. 12. In a speech at Hotel Victoria, Mr Joynson-Hicks stated animals valued at £70,000 were being slaughtered daily in consequence of foot and mouth disease. Although twenty-eight countries are affected, the worst centres are in Shropshire and Cheshire, especially the latter, Avhcrc over twenty cases arc occurring daily, necessitating the virtual devastation of every farm affected. The Ministry and officials arc experiencing difficulty in coping with the situation, which is threatening to desolate the country. A special Cabinet committee has been appointed to deal with the position.
