MOTOR CAR THEFTS THREE IN NINE DAYS (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 25. The third motor car theft in nine days occurred here on Saturday night, when the private garage of Mr P. S. Nicholas, land agent, was entered by a side door and his ear driven off. The car was found on Sunday morning near Bromley cemetery, with its tail light missing. A coil of hose was also stolen by the thieves.

WATERSIDE DISPUTE ENDS

GISBORNE, June 25.

The waterside dispute has been settled, and the Gisborne Sheep Farmers’ Company’s permanent lightermen joined the union this morning. OVERDOSE OF DRUGS SUICIDE AT PALMERSTON PALMERSTON N., June 25. An inquest was held to-day on Walter Ernest Hall, whose dead body was found on Thursday in a local chemist shop where deceased was employed. Evidence was given that deceased, was addicted to taking drugs, and that he must have broken into the shop while under the influence of liquor. In deceased’s hand was a hypodermic syringe and on the counter were three tubes which previously had contained narcotic, also an empty bottle that had previously contained narcotic. The coroner’s verdict was that death was due to an overdose of drugs self-admin-istered while under tho influence of liquor.

EPIDEMIC OF COLDS LYTTELTON HIGH SCHOOL CLOSED (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 25. Lyttelton District High School has been closed for a week from to-day owing to the attendance being under the minimum. The fact is that six teachers were absent to-day with severe colds. Apparently there is an epidemic of colds in Lyttelton, as six outside employees of the Borough Council, as well as the borough engineer and gasworks manager arc down with colds.

ALLEGED FORGERY GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE ARRESTED WELLINGTON, this day. In consequence of an investigation, of accounts of the Repatriation Department by the Police Department and the Government auditor, Henry Patrick Hodgins, clerk, formerly employed by the Department, was arrested yesterday morning. Mr Hodgins appeared later at the Police Court and was charged with forging certain documents relating 'to inventory of furniture. He was remanded.

PICKING THE WINNERS CHARGE AGAINST NEWSPAPER EDITOR AN IMPORTANT RULING - (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. At flic Magistrate’s Court yesterday a charge against Robert H. Billons, editor of the Manawatn Times, of publishing a newspaper which contained advice as to probable result of eight races at the Feilding race meeting on March 31st, was dismissed. The Magistrate said: "I have carefully perused the article which is the foundation for the prosecution, and in my opinion the words complained of.in no case give advice as to the probable result of the horse races —if section 30 of The Gaming Act bears the construction i have placed upon it. The article certainly gives some indication that certain horses are in form and may run prominently, but: in my opinion the language used falls short of giving advice as r,o the probable result of the races. ’’
