FOOTBALL

LEAGUE NOTES (Contributed). The Hamilton reps, defeated Marist Brothers (Auckland) on Saturday at Hinemoa Park. Although the Marist Brothers did not. have their strongest 'team they put in good combination in the field. With the wind in tlioir favour in the first spell Marists threw the ball out and were holding several points advantage when the change over came.. Hamilton set out to overhaul Marists’ lead in the second spell, and with the wind in their favour soon forged ahead and held a good margin when the final whistle blew. The Endean Shield trophy, which is still held by Lower Waikato, promises to again attract keen competition for its possession. The standard of the game in “the home of the game’’ has in the past proved too superior for the challengers, but the steady improvement of the game in other parts inclines the belief that the games in future will be much closer. The large attendance of the public at Carlaw Park each Saturday is an indication that the quality of the football is of a very high standard. In addition to the Provincial games set down for decision the prospects are that a strong Sydney Club will soud across ?i team to play two Saturday and one Wednesday match in Auckland, and one match in the Waikato.

The League football sevon-a-side tournament, was played at Carlaw Park under electric light on Tuesday even; ing last. This is the first occasion in the Dominion on which, football has boon played under electric light, and there were over 3000 people present. In addition to football the League football 100yds handicap was run off. The football tournament final was won by City, who defeated Ponsonbv by IS points to nil. The 100yds handicap was won by Ball (Newton Club), who ran the distance in 11 l-ssec., the running being done in full football uniform, including boots. At a meeting of the Auckland League it was stated that over SO players had turned over to League in Auckland

this season. Among the Auckland junior clubs this season there is a. school team that has come over from Rugby to League, under the care of the Manukau Club. The school players are acquitting themselves well so far in the sixth B grade. Suburbs are unfortunate in losing the services of Dan Coe, who i.s leaving the district. The League is now well established in Coromandel, where a Coromandel Peninsular League has been formed with live senior clubs. The game has also been started in Waihi, Tauranga and Rotorua, and is making rapid strides in the latter place. At a meeting of the local League an invitation from the King Country League to send a team to Taumarunui was received, the matter being left over until later on in the season. League enthusiasts were pleased to see Dick Stewart, the old ex-Rugby rep., turn out, for Suburbs against Matangi. Ho showed plenty of his old 1 dash. There is every likelihood of j Lyall Stewart returning to Cambridge | very shortly. If so his old club will welcome him.
