PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the Executive of the Cambridge Musical and Elocutionary Compet it ions was held at M r Gascoigne ’s offices last nigli f, when there were present: Mrs Walsh, Miss Haul in, Messrs Frank Penn (president), M. P. McDermott (secretary), Geo. Calvert, A. H. Gascoigne, E. B. Kemsley, O. Simpson. An apology was received for the absence of Mr W. H. Reed. Mr H. W. Similes was appointed Director of the Competitions, with Mr L. M. Morrin, Assistant Director. Mr D. C.ongalton was appointed lion, treasurer. Considerable discussion ensued ns regards the date of the Competitions. It was at last decided that the festival commence on October Ist, this date to be subject to revision at next meeting, after further enquiries had been made. There were several important fixtures to be held during the month of September, with which it was inadvisable to clash. The matter of judges, was discussed at length, several applications for positions and suggestions being considered. Mr Byron Brown, of Otffki and. Wellington, was appointed judge of the elocutionary section, but the appointment. of judges in the other sections was held over, pending further enquir-

Sub-C'ommittces were appointed to revise the various sections of schedule, and report to next meeting of the Executive, when it is hoped to adopt the. programme in full. The Secretary reported that, a number of donations had already been promised for the Competitions. Seeing that the expenses of this year’s festival will be very much greater than last year’s, it is hoped that the public will assist liberally towards the prizes.

It was reported at 1 lie meeting that numerous enquiries were already being made regarding the Competitions, which promises well for their success.
