While travelling through the country by rail, visitors to New Zealand aro generally struck by the crude and ugly appearance of our railway stations. In drawing attention to this at a meeting of the Amenities Society, the Hon. Gr. M. Thomson dwelt on the pleasing effect Eakaia station had £n everyone who passed that way. He hoped to see more attention given to the planting of trees and flowers, especially about our suburban railway stations. These stations at present were very barren of anything to relieve the eye or" create a softening effect. He suggested as an encouragement for stationmasters, that, the example of the railway authorities at Home be emulated, viz., by offering prizes to stationmasters for decorating stations. There was ample room at our railway stations for little gardens of flowers and graceful shrubs and trees.
