THE RINKS FINAL.

WON BY ROTORUA

AN EXCITING FINISH,

The final for the rinks competition, played on the Cambridge green yesterday morning, was watched with great interest by a considerable , number of enthusiasts —bowlers and others. The opponents were: Rotorua (Fowkes) and Thames (Cordes). Fowkes won a single off the first head, and the second head showed one all. Then Cordes secured a four, followed by a two. ' The Rotorua rink then secured another single, making them only two, and they stuck at this till their opponents were 13, on the ninth head. Then Rotorua gradually picked up, securing a one, a four, and two singles in suceesion, making the score 9—13. Cordes at last passed the fated thirteen with a single, but Fowkes scored two ones in succession after this. Then Thames gained one point. Rotorua at this stage scored a three, making the score 14 — 15, against Rotorua. At the nineteenth head Fowkes secured another three, thus giving them a lead for the first time after the first head —17 —15. Amidst excitement, Cordes scored one in the next head, and the final head was commenced with the score 17 —16, in favour of Rotorua. In this last head Fowkes was lying three up when Cordes with his last bowl lay the shot. Fowkes then promptly drove, and made a dead head. In the next try Rotorua was lying one up, when Thames with a fast bowl took kitty to the ditch. On the third essay the final head was decisive. Things were looking rather black for Thames, when their third man drove kitty, leaving Thames lyingtwo up. Cordes failed to improve the position, while Fowkes, with his final bowl, laid the shot, and the match was thus won, 18—16. It was an exciting finish to a well-contested match in which splendid play was witnessed time and again. TO-DAY'S PLAY Section A.—White 18 v. Miller 21; Snoad 24 v. Martinson 10; Snoad 13 v.
