Life-Saving Apparatus.

The latest sad fatality in' Cambridge, by which Mr T'hos. Chard lost his life, brings into prominence the need for some life-saving apparatus at the wharf. There have been several fatalities in the vicinity of this spot, and in any locality where people assemble near deep water, some provision should be made in case of accidents. The Cambridge wharf is frequented by a considerable number of people. Not only do people gather there to participate in river trips, or to watch the boats arrive and depart, but the river banks in this locality are a favourite picnicing ground for- both old and young. The banks are very steep at this spot, and the wajker exceedingly deep, while the current is sufficient, to cause trouble to other than strong swimmers. There should certainly be some life-saving apparatus provided at a spot like this for emergencies, even if it only consists of a life buoy, with a good coil of rope. Such provision would cost very little, and might at any time save precious lives. It may be argued that a life-buoy would be-removed by hoodlums, but Ave do not think such would be the case. Anyone found tampering with any life-saving gear would be liable to a heavy penalty, and the public would soon be educated on the necessity of leaving any apparatus in readiness for an emergency alone. This may seem only a small matter, but it is of importance, as one never knows when some such simple provision may save valuable lives. We hope that the need will be filled without delay.
