FOOTBALL

FOOTBALLERS ENTERTAINED VISIT OF AUCKLAND THIRTEEN REPRESENTATIVES Prior to their returning to Auckland on Saturday evening the visiting Auckland League footballers were entertained by the Cambridge s Rugby League to dinner at the Central Hotel. The comfortable dining-room was tastefully arranged, the visitors and local guests numbering about 40. After justice had been done to an excellent repast the president of the Cambridge Rugby League welcomed the visitors to Cambridge. Speaking on behalf of the League in Cambridge, Mr W. Wilkinson said that in spite of the bad weather and unfavourable playing conditions, the game that afternoon had proved a most pleasant and interesting one. The speaker congratulated the visiting team on their victory and the line team work they had displayed in their rearguard that afternoon. He also desired to comment on the great improvement shown by the local players, particularly,in their splendid tackling, which materially affected the scoring in the first half of the game. The Cambridge players, however, wcyj practically new to the game, and it was such visits as the one that afternoon that would materially help the League game, forward in this district. At the request of the president, His Worship the Mayor (Mr S. Lewis) welcomed the visitors to Cambridge, and referred to the progress the League code had made, particularly in Auckland. The success the game had met with in the -city, together with the enthusiasm of the governing body, had laid the foundation of an excellent playing area for the city in Carlow Park ground. Here the "Chinaman had been ousted from his vegetable gardens,'' and the' city presented with a fine sports area that in years to come would be far better appreciated than perhaps at the present moment. The. speaker paid a tribute to the foresight of the Auckland League official's, in the direction aforementioned. His Worship congratulated the visitors on their fine showing that afternoon, and considered the Cambridge League players were under a debt of gratitude to-the visitors for coming to Cambridge, for undoubtedly the style of play shown would be beneficial to the local players. MiLewis concluded his remarks by again warmly welcoming the visitors to Cambridge. Mr N. R. Culpan (manager), in responding on behalf of the Auckland team, thanked the speakers and the Cambridge Rugby League for their warm welcome and kindly references to the team. They had come along to Cambridge solely to help along the game in this district, and they were fortunate, in the fact that they had a governing body that did all it could to help in this direction. Mr Culpan, as an indication of the success the game was meeting with in Auckland, mentioned that none of the players present had received rep. honours previously. They had two teams' in seniority to that present which were under strict training by a first-class coach, and it was hoped by such' efforts to restrain the onslaughts of the Australian team about to visit the Dominion.

Mr Gregory -(captain of the Auckland team) and M* Everett Campbell (captain of the local team) also briefly spoke on behalf of their respective teams.

In response to a sportsmanlike reference to the Cambridge Rugby Union Mr W. K. Edwards congratulated the visitors on the fine exhibition they had given the spectators that afternoon. He considered that the success and efficiency city football teams attained was in no small measure due to the facilities for training, particularly night training. Had local players such conveniences there was not the slightest doubt but that they .would put up as good performances. Cheers were then given for the respective teams, the visitors leaving at 10.00 p.m. to connect, with the express for Auckland. THE LEAGUE GAME (By "Oval.") The following are the teams for the Hawke's Bay v. Cambridge-Hamilton combined match, which will take place at Victoria Square to-morrow afternoon, commencing at 2.40 p.m. The local team appears a strong one, and with the visiting combination being particularly strong in their forward division, whilst their backs will be on about a par with the local rearguard, an interesting game should result.
