FIRE BRIGADE

CITIZENS’ COMPLIMENTARY DANCE

FUNCTION UNQUALIFIED SUC CESS

That the services of all those who give their time and interest towards the prevention of loss of life and property by fire is wholeheartedly appreciated was borne out in a striking manner on Tuesday evening last, at the Town Hall, Cambridge, when, despite the inclemency of the weather, no less than 1.10 couples participated iu the long-night dance tendered to the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade by the citizens of Cambridge. Shortly before the time appointed for the commencement of the function rain fell heavily, and many—those who had organised the preparations particularly —anticipated a disappointing attendance; but ere the first item on the programme of twenty-one dances had commenced, the hall presented an animated appearance with its splendid attendance of dancers and many others who had come to lend their support.

The floor being in excellent condition, coupled with delightful dance music, the programme went through with an enjoyable abandon for the dance that made the gathering the most successful held in the Town Hall for a very long time. The arrangements made for the convenience of those attending was all that could be desired, the stage being set aside with tables and cards for sitting-out and for those who did not desire to dance.

At the conclusion of part one of the dance programme an adjournment was made to the supper-room, where a bounteous and dainty supper was enticingly laid out on tables decorated tastefully with white and red camellias and greenery. The. ladies of Cambridge have acquired for themselves a recognised fame in this direction, and the supper provided on Tuesday evening was fully in keeping with their previous efforts. During the evening Captain H. Yause, on behalf of the Brigade, tendered to the citizens of Cambridge their appreciation of the splendid support from the citizens ..that evening. The speaker desired to particularly thank the .ladies committee for the bounteous supper provided, the general committee, the masters of ceremonies, and all who had in any way helped to make the function the undoubted success it had proved. Continuing, Captain Vausc specially mentioned Mr G. A. Clark, who was the originator of this idea of helping the local Brigade. Mr Clark had taken a great interest in the Brigade generally, and had ancl was spending much time in its interests. In concluding Captain Vausc briefly mentioned that it was proposed to devote the net financial results'of the function that evening towards the provision of an up-to-date and efficient fire-alarm, in the form of an automatic siren. The need of such an alarm was obvious to all, and the speaker hoped the public would heartily support the Brigade in this direction. The dancing was kept up until the small hours of the morning, when all wended their way homew;ards after spending several very enjoyable hours, in which the most pleasurable keynote was the sociability of all present. The committees responsible for the successful organisation were as follows: —Ladies’ Committee:- Mayoress (Mrs S. Lewis), Mesdames A. Gane, W. White, A. H. Gascoigne, E. N. Souter, H. Vause, C. Miller, W. K. Reeve, W. H. Hall, W. Thorpe, J. Collis. Gentlemen’s Committee: Mayor (Mr S. Lewis), Messrs A. H. Gascoigne, A. Gane, G. A. Clark, C. J. Miller, H. Ferguson, YYVR. Edwards, W. H. Hall, D. Congalton, H. Vause, G. Drew, W. K. Reeve (secretary). The orchestral music was supplied by Messrs Banficld’s orchestra, and as usual, was excellent. Extras were kindly played by Misses I. Linstrom, O. Wilkinson, E. McMarlane, T. Graham and Mrs W. R. Edwards. The masters of ceremony were Messrs H. Vause, G. Burns, J, Byrne and A. L. Clark. Details of the ladies’ dresses will appear in our ladies’ page of next issue.
