With the complete collapse of the peace negotiations in regard to the railway strike, the United States is facing the full gravity of an industrial crisis. Approximately a million men arc engaged in the strikes. Mr Hooper, chairman of the Railroad Labour Board, asserts that the issues that caused the strike have been lost sight of, and the question of seniority to-day is the chief point of contention. The union officials firmly demand that all rights shall be restored to the shopmen, that being the rock on which the peace efforts have broken down. The railway presidents are equally firm in insistence that the seniority rights of the men now working shall be recognised. Three hundred trains in the Eastern States have been cancelled. EFFECT Or COAL SHORTAGE MANY FACTORIES CLOSING NEW YORK, July 20. Chicago advices state that the industrial situation due to the coal strike is growing critical. Scores of factories are laying off their men, and industry is threatened with a coal shut down. The Illinois coal operators claim that it is impossible to open the mines under President Harding's plan owing to the 100 per cent organisation of the miners. Tho New York railway authorities claim that the actions of the strikers arc endangering the lives of passengers. In several instances tampering with the brakes is alleged. Thirty colliery companies have formed an Industrial' Housing Association, and have subscribed £1,000,800 capital, with the object of providing 10,000 cheap houses for miners in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Wales, at the rate of 2,000 a year. The association will not seek any profit and the directors will not draw fees.
