PRISONER ESCAPES , BOLTS FROM A TRAIN (By Telegraph—Press Association). ASHBURTON, yesterday. A prisoner named AVm. Herbert Chapman, under sentence of six months for the theft of clothing and. a bicycle, escaped from tho north-bound express yesterday about 3.40 p.m., while the train was stationary near Ashburton The escapee was last heard of at 5 o’clock yesterday, when inquiring for clothes and a bicycle a mile from the railway. Prisoner was at the time in custody of a constable, bound for Paparoa prison. The police arc still ingSLEEPWALKING ACCIDENT MAN FALLS FROM WINDOW (By Telegraph—Press Association) CARTERTON, yesterday. Walter Dear, a soldier settler in Ahiaruhe settlement, who was staying at the Marquis Hotel, went, sleepwalking at 3 o’clock iu the morning, opened his bedroom window, 16ft from the ground, and stepped oft. He was picked up with his face cut and bruised and both wrists broken. He is now in hospital.
SUSPICIOUS PIKES OUTBREAKS AT NELSON (By Telegraph—Press Association) NELSON, yesterday. A fiTO was discovered in the wail of tlio cathedral at 10 o'clock last night, and was extinguished before, much damage was done. The building was undergoing repair. At midnight, a detached shod at the rear of Grant’s buildings was found oA fire, and while this was being extinguished another fire was discovered at the rear of the premises of the Grand Cafe, just opposite.
