CHEAP LAND
ATTRACTIVE OPENING IN SOUTH AFRICA GOOD FARMS AT 2/6 AN ACRE Mr Ostler, in his address at Cambridge on Saturday night, excited ftjie interest of his hearers by telling' them ' of cheap land available in parts of Rhodesia. He told how he had been offered a farm of 10,000 acres of firstclass land in the Abcrcorn district —- ideal cattle-raising land, as level as a table—at 2/6 per acre, payable in ten years. Purchasers of this country had to satisfy the Government that they had a certain amount of capital, and it- was required that the owner, or a white substitute, live on it for five years. The Abcrcorn country, referred to, was plateau land, about 5500 to 6000 feet above sea level. The climate was beautiful there, and the rainfall averaged about 00 to 60 inches per annum. Mr Ostler predicted a great future for this country, and. said'that anyone wanting an ideal life in a lovely country would do well to seize this golden opportunity, as there was plenty more of this country to be secured. Incidentally, Mr Ostler stated that he had secured the block of land offered to him, and had a partner, with him in the venture.
One could live in luxury in the country for a very little, as labour was so very cheap, and a man could retire on about £2OOO. The regular payment for farm labour was at the rate of two pounds of mealy flour (equivalent to one penny) per day.
