EUREKA MEMORIAL

UNVEILED BY LADY JELLICOE

Advantage was taken of the visit of Lady Jellicoe to the distsrict to unveil the Soldiers’ Memorial at Eureka*on Sunday last. Unfortunately it was a wintry day, but/the rain held off during the ceremony, w r hich was almost impressive and was witnessed by a large .nunflber of district residents. Among llytfse present was a party from Cambridge, representing the Borough Council comprising Councillors Gascojgnc, Edgar James and Moore, Mr and Mrs J. W. Cocks. Viscountess Jellicoe, who was motored to Eureka by Colonel Allen, performed the ceremony of unveiling the monument “To the glory of God, and in memory of the men from this district who gave, their services t to the Empire in the Great War. ’’ The Vcn. Archdeacon Cowie recited a short prayer, after which “The Last Post” was sounded, and a volley fired by a firing party. The memorial is a very beautiful obelisk of grey granite. On one side are the names of all the men who served, and on tho other the names of the fallen.
