LEAMINGTON AFFAIRS

<s> MEETING OF THE TOWN BOARD. The usual monthly meeting of the Leamington Town BOard was held on Thursday evening*, the members present being Messrs W. J. White (Chairman), H. Bell, W. F. Morse, G. Day, A. C. Jarrett, and J. Keeley. A circular was received regarding helping Y.M.C.A. work, and the Chairman remarked that there was no doubt it was a worthy object. He had noticed that Mr H. M. Smeeton was to speak in Cambridge on Y.M.C.A. work on the 23rd inst. On the motion of Messrs Bell and Jarrett, it was decided to co-operate with the Cambridge Borough in this matter. A letter was received from the National Efficiency Board, regarding the curtailing of works, and it was decided to write to the Board and explain the Town Board's position. Mr Keeley referred to the drainage in Wordsworth Street, saying the work, which would cost from £lO to £ls, should be done before the winter comes on. On the motion of the Chairman, it was decided that the -members of the Board inspect the localtiy and see what is necessary to be done. On the motion of Messrs Keeley and Day, it was decided to accept the offer made by the. Waipa County Council regarding the disposal of Chitty's gravel pit. On the Chairman's motion, seconded by Mr Jarrett, it was decided to invitetenders for cutting noxious weeds on the gravel reserve. It was decided to inspect the drain in Browning Street on Wednesday afternoon next to see what is necessary to be done to it. Some discussion took place regarding the charge to be made for the use of the Board's horse gnd dray, and it was deeded., to defer consideration until the next meeting. \ A statement of the receipts and expenditure for the year was submitted by the-clerk (Mr G. H. Ollard). The chief items of receipts were £44 14/8 brought forward from the previous year, £302 8/11 from rates, £74 6/ Government subsidy on rates, £43 14/6 from dogs and cattle registration, £29 14/7 from rents, the total (including a debit balance of £2l 10/8) bong £533 5/4. The principal item's of expenditure were £2l 18/8 for interest and sinking fund for the high level bridge, £l4 19/ for printing and advertising, £62 1/11 for office expenses and salary, and £319 15/1 for maintenance expenses.
