MR NEWTON JONES.

Mr New lon Jones, the Young People’s Evangelist, who with his son is making a tour throughout New Zealand, as representatives of that great religious and social organisation, “The Sunday-school iJnion,” gave his first address in Cambridge at the Y.M.C.A. on Saturday last. The meeting was attended by Christian workers and Sunday-school teachers, to whom Mr Newton Jones gave some well chosen words of advice as to the management'of large classes of children. He also showed a deep interest in the progress and spread of the schools in Cambridge, On Sunday morning he preached at the Methodist Church, whilst on Sunday evening he gave a sermon at the Presbyterian Church, his subject being “Everything for Nothing ” Mr Newton Jones has a magnetic personality and is seen at his best when dealing with children. Ic was our pleasure (0 be present when he gave two of his now famous Chalk Talks to boys and girls, on Sunday and Monday afternoons respectively. With an ordinary blackboard and a few colored chalks he illuslrated his remarks and showed the pitfalls that beset children. By the subdued and reverent manner of the little ones as they left the hall, it was apparent that his words had in many cases made a strong and lasting impression. On Monday evening at the Presbyterian Church, Mr Newton Jones gave his final address in Cambridge to a large congregation. His subject was the history of his own life, which not only proved of absorbing interest, but taught to all present a moral lesson that few will forget. His son, who is a baritone of exceptional power, rendered in a masterly manner an anthem especially composed for the occasion, Mr Jones leaves Cambridge today for Waihi and the Thames, returning to Hamilton again shortly. From there he leaves for an extended tour through the South Island, having New Zealand finally on November 16th fo: the Argentine.
