CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above Board was held at Cambridge on Saturday. This being the fust meeting of the newly-elected Board, the Returning Officer, Mr J. Douglass, occupied the chair, and announced that the whole of the old members had been re-elected, they being the only ones nominated. There were present—Messrs W. Newell, Jas. Hooker, N. Banks and G. Watt; and Mr G. Booth sent an apology for being absent. Mr Wm. Newell was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Board, and, after thanking the members for their continued confidence, took his seat at the head of the table. A ballot was then taken to decide the two members to retire next year, and it fell to the lot of Messrs Watt and Banks. —Selby'fe DrainMrs Gleeson wrote stating she would be pleased to contribute £2 10s towards cleaning out this drain. Attention was drawn to the fact that the drain was obstructed with willow roots and rubbish where it passed through Mr S. Cowling's land. The secretary was instructed to write Mr Cowling stating the Hoard required the obstructions removed from the drain, and that unless he catted the work to be done would be taken, under the Public Works Act, to compel him to do so. As soon as a reply is received from Mr Cowling, tenders will be called for cleaning out the drain through Mrs Gleeson's farm and for about 2£ chains through Mr Cowling's. —French Pass RoadMr Rendall waited upon the Board re deviating the road that leads from the French Pass road through Mr Smart's land to his (Mr Rendall's) farm. The matter was discussed at considerable length, and eventually it was decided to meet Mr Smart on Monday morning and endeavor to finally arrive at an amicable arrangement. —Victoria Road— Mr A. McFarlane wrote stating he had cleaned out the drain on the side of Victoria-road for some years. About 70 chains of it now wanted cleaning, and he asked the Board if they could see their way to assist, him in having the work done. The Board decided it could not do so. —A Closed RoadThere is a small Vietoriaroad that has been closed, near the Hautapu Butter Factory, and the Cainbridge Dairy Company is anxious to purchase the same. The company has appointed Mr Martin Butler to arbitrate on its behalf, and the Board deci ded to delegate Mr G. Booth to act on their behalf; and if they cannot agree they must call in a third person to act as umpire. —Selling GravelMessrs Duncan Bros., of Hautapu, wrote stating they required gravel for concreting, and asked permission to take a supply from the Board's pit, known as Mrs Hansin's. There is a resolution on the minute book to the effect that the Board will not sell gravel from any of its pits; but it was decided to rescind that motion and charge anyone requiring gravel 6d per yard for unscreened gravel, and Is 6d per yard for that which is screened; but that only ratepayers in the Board District shall be allowed the privilege, and then the material rhall be taken under the supervision of the surfaceman. —Supervisor of Roads It was resolved that ;\;r T. Pennell be supervisor of the whole of the roadd in the district; and that he present a repcrt at each meeting stating what he has done during the month, and what works are required. —The RateIt was resolved to 3trike a rate of fd in the £, similar to that of last year, at the next meeting. This will give an annual return of about £770. —Water on RoadsAttention was drawn to the manner in which the water backs up on the main road, at the junction of roads near the Hautapu school, and Mr Banks offered to contribute £lO towards the cost of deepening and straightening the drain down the Bald Hill road, near Mr Hooker's, and up towards the school. The water also affects the lands of Messrs M. Butler and W. Russell, and it was decided to write and ask what those gentlemen would contribute. —WorksIt was decided to attend to the road near Mr Hargreaves', and the one leading to the Fencourt homestead, as soon as the supervisor has furnished reports thereon. -ClerkMr J. Douglass was reappointed secretary, treasurer, returning officer, and the person appointed to serve notices on behalf of the Board. —Finances— At date the overdraft was £214 2s Bd, and the outstanding rates amount to £lB 6s 4d; the Government subsidy on rates collected, amounting to £125 has yet to be paid; and the accounts passed for payment totalled £llO. Sydney Saunders, charged at the Auckland S.M. Court with misappropriating £3l 13s 3d, the moneys of his employers, Messrs Tonson Garlick and Co., Ltd., was remanded for a week.
