The continued dry weather has brought down the milk supply at the factories in the Waikato, and the milling season is therefore likely to be a short one. A correspondent writes that the young ladies arc thinking of organising a leap year ball. The idea is a good one and should prove a great success, the opportunity arising only once in four years. The locally-owned marc Lconette scored a win and a second at theNgaruawahia races yesterday. Anna Lombard ran second to Claremont in the Maiden Hurdles at Takapuna. The Raglan Dairy Company has received intelligence that one of its shipments of butter to London realised 118 s per cwt., which is equivalent to 11.65 d per lb., f.o.b. Auckland. The recently erected Band Rotunda in the Domain was used for the first time last night, when the Town Band rendered an acceptable programme of music before a large number of people. The Rotunda has been installed with the municipal gas. The Rotunda is of a very ornamental and graceful design, and is greatly admired by visitors to the Domain. According to a cable message, Colonel Hopton, Commandant of the British Rifie team, interviewed in Sydney, after return from New Zealand, said he would rather be in Australia than God’s Own Country. He complained of high accomodation charges, but his chief grievance against New Zealand was the restrictions placed on the sale of liquor. He was not a drinking man in a general sense but said most people like a glass of something with meals, and in New Zealand it was difficult to get a glass of ale or wine. He did not care to express any stronger opinion because he had left the place and was not likely to re-visit it. We regret to record the death of Mr Hugh Wynne Price, which took place at his late residence, “ Palenquc,” Thornton Road, this morning. The late Mr Price, who was aged 45 years, was educated at Cheltenham College, Gloucestershire, where his father, the late Rev. Price, was a master. He took an active interest in scientific and archaeological expeditions in Egypt and Central America, and it was while accompanying one of these expeditions in the latter country that his health broke down. He then came to New Zealand, and settled in Cambridge about ten years ago. The deceased was a valued member of St. Andrew’s choir, and his kindly disposition and estimable qualities secured him many friends. The deceased leaves a widow, who will have much sympathy in her bereavement.
