THE BUTTER MARKET.
A representative of an Auckland paper has been interviewing the butter merchants in that city. “ Butter prospects,” said one merchant, in reply to a question as to the probable rise in values. “ Prices are going up like rockets. I will go so far as to say that before the winter comes on, the retail price of best creamery butter will be Is 6d per lb. He said he had received a cable from a firm of English merchants, asking him to send four times the quantity shipped last year.” Asked to what cause the shortage at Home was ascribablc, the Auckland merchant replied that there seemed to be a falling off in the supply right through the dairying countries of the world. Canada, which for some years has been rivalling Denmark in the extent of its shipments, has this season sent practically nothing to the London market. In the course of a conversation with the representative of a Hamilton paper, Mr Wesley Spragg, managing director of the N.Z. Dairy Association, expressed his surprise at the views stated and said that as far as he could see there was no indication that butter on the local market will be any higher than in previous years. The price at Home is equal to about Is per pound here, and the market here will be governed by this.
