CAMBRIDGE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the above was held at the Farmers’ Club room -on Tuesday night. There was a fair attendance, the President (Mr C. 11. Treadgold) in the chair. The quarterly report referred to the following matters ;—New Courthouse, and the deputation to the lion J, McGowan in getting the building erected in brick or concrete ; the unreasonable delays in getting Cambridge telephone messages through to Auckland; the Manngatautari-Karapiro telephone line was practically an accomplished fact; and it was hoped a definite arrangement would shortly be arrived at regarding the Pukerimu-Kaipaki telephone; and the opening of the high level bridge. The secretary of the Cambridge Cooperative Dairy Company wrote in reply to a letter from the Chamber, that his directors did not think it advisable to enter into the bacon industry at present. Mr F. Maxwell, secretary of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, wrote soliciting the co-operation of the Chamber in getting telephone duplication with Auckland. Those present were agreed that a duplicate wire was necessary, but they were not inclined to support any action unless Cambridge would receive equal privileges. The opinion was expressed that Hamilton would probably get the loan of Cambridge in the matter. The President, and Messrs Hammond and Reid spoke of the great delays, and indignities that occurred at the present, owing to connection with Auckland having to be made through Hamilton. Mr Tudehopc said he had given up using the telephone with Auckland. He found it paid him far better to use the telegraph. Members thought Cambridge should have a wire of its own with Auckland. Proposed by Mr Tudekops, and carried : “ That the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce be informed that the Cambridge Chamber will gladly co-operate with them in securing a duplicate wire for Cambridge, and are already in communication with the Department on the subject. Proposed by Mr Hammond, seconded by Mr Brooks, that the Department be urged to erect a direct telephone wire between Auckland and Cambridge, as the present arrangement is quite made, quate for the business of the Waikato, and that this Chamber claims that the time has arrived for a direct separate wire to Auckland, and that in the meantime a petition of settlers be prepared and forwarded to the Department. The Secretary of the North Island Egg-Laying Competition forwarded particulars of the next competition to bo held at Cambridge in May next. It was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr E. J. Wilkinson, that in regard to the statutory haifholiday, the Chamber recommend the Borough Council to retain Wednesday. The subject of moveable holidays was briefly discussed, and it was resolved that this matter, and also that of plate glass insurance, be referred to the Executive to report on. The question of the Chamber again entering a pen for the next egg-laying competition was discussed, but nothing was decided on. An account, 5s to Messrs Crowther and Bell, was passed for payment.
