CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the above Council was held last evening, when there were present:—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Buckland), Ore. McVcagh, O'Toole, Reid, Wilkinson, Ferguson, Marfcll, Dickinson, and Hartly. THE DISTANCE FROM AUCKLAND. The General Manager of Kail ways wrote that'the alterations to the railway between Cambridge and Auckland had not altered the distance to any apprcciable extent, and it was still over 100 miles. THE FORMATION OF WIIARF-STREIfr. The- following tenders were received for the above:—Tobi and Co., £300; Riley and Robertson, £298 10s lOd; G. Hooper, £177 15s 8d; W. Victors, £165! —The last-mentioned was accepted. GRAVELLING TENDERS. The following tenders were received for gravelling; Riley and Robertson, Duke street, Is 2d, Vogel street, Is -Id, Dougherty street, 4s 3d; W. McLcish, Is 2d, Is 4d, 3s 3d respectively. The last mentioned was accepted. KiKKWOOD STREET. It was resolved to continue Kirkwood street right across in a straight line to Victoria street, and to enclose the Jubilee Garden. DRAINING. The Mayor was authorised to wait upon the' South Hautapu drainage, and ascertain upon what terms the Borough would be allowed to drain into the Hautapu drain. THE GAS SEWER. The Gas Engineer reported that 73 gas-meters arc now out, and 80 services were ready. He was asked to report upon the cost of laying gas mains to the bridge and several other streets. The gas loan is all expended, and there is talk of another loan being necessary. DRAINAGE. This matter was discussed at some
length, and the Mayor said the offer made by the Council, during his absence, to lay 60ft. on private property, was illegal, and consequently was void, and they must collect the debts owing. Cr. Hartly said he thought Mr Harker was being hardly dealt with. His property was not within 100 ft. of the main drain and therefore need not be connected with, the system. The Council then made a public drain, up a right-of-way at the back of Mr Tudehopc's and now charged Harker for 80 feet of drain laid over Tudehope's property.! It was resolved to give all who pay by the 31st July, 25 per cent, off thenaccounts. It is proposed to erect an up-to-date latrine and a retiring room for ladies. DAYS OF MEETING. It was decided to alter the days of meeting to the second and fourth Fridays in each month after this month. The temporary surfaceman wrote asking to have his wages raised to 10s per day.—Granted. It was decided to put £3l worth of gravel from Dougherty's pit on Dukestreet.
It was decided to draw the attention of the Public Health Officer to the fact that the Railway and Police Deparment did not use the pan service. Cr Reid referred to the matter of a technical school at Cambridge, and moved the following resolution :—" That this Council resents the misleading statement by the director of technical instruction (as reported in the Herald of the 1 13th hist.), that Cambridge is not of sufficient importance to warrant the establishment of classes'for the study of agricultural subjects here, and requests the Board that when giving effect to its resolution, regarding the establishment of technical schools in the Waikato, to include the teaching of those subjects in its curriculum." , The motion was seconded by the Mayor, and after Cr Dickinson had spoken, it was carried.
