GOVERNMENT LAND VALUATIONS
(TO the editor.) Sir, —I am in receipt of the latest Government Land Valuations, and I presume all other farmers have received theirs. In my case the Unimproved Value is mgde at least three times greater than it ought to be, and to do this the improvements arc assessed at far below' the actual cost. The reason for this way of valuing is apparently to bring nearly every farmer within the scope of the Land and Income Tax Department. It appears to me that it is quite time owners of country lands made a firm stand against the system of undervaluing improvements and jumping up the so-called unimproved value, as it is simply a surreptitious w 7 ay of taxing improvements, which are supposed to be exempt. Every landowner should object to his valuation, and I think branches of the Farmers’ Union should take. up the matter with a view to combined action. I am, etc., J. D. P. Morgan.
