Miss Irene Ainsley, the New Zealand contralto, made a successful debut at Bcchstein Hall. The Prince of Wales was amongst those present, Madame Melba played the accompaniments. The newspapers published complimentary notices of Miss Ainsley's performance and predict for her a bright future.

The obsolete warships sold at Portsmouth realised £84,000. The Katoomba and Tauranga realised £80,500 each.
BRITISH NAVY
London, July 9. Admiral Curzon Howe takes seven battleships and six cruisers to Libau in August and will spend five weeks at Russian ports.
BRAZIL'S NEW TARIFF. London, July 11
Brazil's new tariff duty reduces the duty on American flour and many other imports by twenty per cent.
BUTTER COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
London, July 11
. The Butter Committee's report will be issued shortly. It is understood the recommendations limit moisture in butter to 16 per cent, insists on the registration and inspection of factories, prohibits the addition of vegetable fat, but does not interfere with milk-blended butter, but suggests it should be sold under a special name. The report suggests the importation of adulterated butter should be in proportion to the magnitude of the consignment.
PREFERENTIAL TARIFF. London, July 11
At the Commerce Congress, a motion in favor of preferential tariff was carried by a large majority.
