CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above was held on Thursday evening. Present : The Mayor (Mr AV. F. Buckland) in the chair, Crs, J. Hally, G. E. Clark, 11. Davies, Geo. Dickinson, A. F. Stone, F. O’Toole, G. AV. Yenables, J. Ferguson, and E. J. AVilkinson. BILLIARD SALOONS. From AVilliam Clifford, re the Council’s letter to him about a license for his billiard saloon. He stated he intended to consult his solicitor in the matter. If he was compelled to close his shop at 10 p.m., he would close up altogether. He did not think the Council had power to make him close, as by Act of Parliament he was entitled to keep the saloon open from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. If the Council looked up the Police Gazette or Hansard, they would find that they had “ nothing to do with it.” The Mayor said the Council had power, and the billiard saloon proprietors were simply setting them at defiance. He moved that the clerk be instructed to inform Messrs Higgins, and AV. Clifford that if licenses are not taken out by 12 noon on Saturday, prosecutions will be instituted. Cr. O’Toole seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. oddfellows’ sports. From secretary Oddfellows’ Sports Committee, re the charge of 13s fid for advertising the sports. They did not come out as well as they expected, and the Council’s 10 per cent on the gate money, amounting to £3 9s, they really could not afford to pay. They also had to pay a man for two days’ mowing and clearing the course before they could use it at all. The Mayor moved that the Council accept £3 as full payment, and that they pay the advertising charge of 13s fid. The motion was seconded by Cr. Clark and carried unanimously. THE STREET LAMPS. From A. Wilkinson and Co., contractors for Borough street lighting, reporting that the lamp at the railway crossing had been badly damaged. The large globe had been broken, and they could not replace it. _ Mayor and Cr. Stone expressed dissatisfaction with the street lighting. Cr. Clark was of opinion the Council were not getting proper yalue for their money. The Mayor moved that Crs. Dickinson and Stone interview Messrs AVilkinson and Co. in the matter, with power, if necessary, to cancel the contract.— Seconded by Cr. Ferguson and carried unanimously. FIRE BRIGADE. From C. Huge, secretary to the Cambridge Fire Brigade, re the re-paving or tarring of the front portion of the Brigade station, which was urgently in need of repair. Referred to the Fire Brigade Committee of the Council. DOG COLLARS. Tenders were received for a supply of dog collars:—F. O’Toole 9d each (accepted), nine dozen ordered; A. Beuth, 9s fid per dozen. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. General account.—Overdraft at sth January, £7lO 19s 4d, accounts paid £47 17s 7d, amounts lodged £95 8s 7d, present overdraft £663 8s 4d, accounts to pass £45 3s. Overdraft when accounts are paid £7OB 11s 4d. AVaterworks account.—Credit at sth January £3B Os Bd, amounts lodged £2O is 4d, accounts paid £l3 15s fid, present credit £44 12s fid, accounts to pay £l4l 12s 2d, debit when accounts are paid £96 19s Bd. Cemetery account.—Credit at sth January £l2 15s, amount since lodged Accounts passed for payment.—F. O’Toole £3 12s, AV. D. Cheyne 10s, Audit Inspector £6, AV. McLeish £2 Bs, G. Hastie £B, H. Houchen 15s, New Zealand Insurance Co. £3, T. R. Chin" £l2, salary £l2 10s. ° The report was adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. The Valuation Department forwarded £77 ss, subsidy due to the Council. The Chief Postmaster, Auckland, wrote stating that he had instructed the Postmaster at Cambridge to close the outgoing mails at 11.40 a.m., instead of 11. 00 a.m. He regretted that he could not arrange to further shorten the interval between the closing and the departure of the train. As the matter now stands, the interval is shorter than at other places of equal importance. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr J. R. Pauli, proprietor of the AVaikato Times, for gratuitously supplying each of the members of the Council with a copy of the Times’ Almanac. Cr. Yenables brought under the notice of the Council a successful experiment with tar and dry stones in street formation in the AYairarapa. He also said oil poured on the streets had been found most effectual in abating the dust nuisance in Australia. After some other business had been transacted, the Council .adjourned a few minutes before 9 o’clock
