£40,000 FOR 16s.

LOTTERY.COUP FOR TWO BEOTHERS-IN-LAW A £40,000 prize drawing was won by two brothers-in-law living at Lille, in North France. Their names are Gelper and Messing. Gelper is forty-eight years of age and he has a wife and five children. By trade a journeyman painter, he had been out of work a week when he heard of his stroke of luck. He declared that he would give £4OO to each member of his family and w’ould buy an annuity for his father. The other winner, Messing, is aged thirty-two, and is a bachelor. He is a brass turner, and is employed by M. Payeu, Rue Henri Kolb, Lille. He has three brothers and two sisters, and is well-known among his fellow-workmen as an amateur actor. On hearing of his winnings, Messing said, “ Well, I am very pleased, because this sum will enable me to help my brothers and sisters, who have not not been lucky in life. My brother-in-law and myself bought the ticket some months ago from a local firm of Rankers, Messrs Pajot and Lefebvre. It cost us 16s. We went together and paid 8s each, so that my 8s has brought me in £20,000.” Interviewed, Gelper said: “My wife created a scene when I bought the ticket for spending such a large sum as 8s from our household savings.”
