THE Waikato Independent. THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 1906. PUBLIC BATHING PLACE FOR CAMBRIDGE.
HIS Worship the Mayor (Mr W. F. Buckland) strongly believes that no stone should be left unturned in the endeavour to secure for Cambridge all practicable modern advantages and conveniences. His latest suggestion, which appeals to us somewhat, will probably be submitted to the. members of the Borough Council for consideration this evening. It is that the disused gravel pit at the junction of Thornton Eoad and Gros-yenor-streets, being a perfect eyesore in its existing state, might with advantage be converted into a public bathing place. Once this was erected, it would no doubt be selfsupporting. It is recognised by all thoughtful and progressive minds that ill order to attract tourists and desirable residents Cambridge must be modernised as much as possible. The liver being much too dangerous, the possession of up-to-date baths for the public would be one step in the direction named. It will therefore be interesting to learn what the Mayor’s detailed proposals are regarding this subject. Where bathing is concerned the mind quite naturally reverts to the children, and it is not difficult to imagine with what rare delight the school children would regard the special hours set apart for the health-giving exercise of bathing. Here they could be taught the useful art of swimming, which in many places is considered a necessary part of the general education of the young.
