A DENIAL
LORD KITCHENER'S PREDICTION OF A SHORT WAR. Received 11. 20 p.m., 4th. Melbourne, October 4. Ihe Defence Department cabled to Sir George Reid asking if Lord Kitchener's cabled statement that the war was not likely to last long was correct. Sir G. Reid replied that the statement attributed to Lord Kitchener was absolutely incorrect. The London agent now cables that Lord Kitchener's statement was taken from the Globe's report of a farewell gathering of territorials at which a captain repeated what Lord Kitchener had said when inspecting them. Received 8.45 a.m.. sth. London, October 4. The Times' military correspondent warns the country that the prospects are for a long war, and urges corresponding measures.
