Petrograd, October 1. Two German divisions in the battle at Druskeniki were annihilated. The lighting on the frontier extends over a hundred-mile front. All the German attempts to force the passage over the Niemen have been repulsed. The Forest of Augustovo, through which the Germans are now retreating, is 24 miles from north to south, and 35 from east to west. It is intercepted by u canal connecting the Niemen and Vistula, and studded with lakes. The heavy rain latterly has reduced some parts of the district to a quagmire. The Russians operating in the forest are attacking the German flank with a view to cutting the communications. German barbarities in Russian Poland have provoked reprisals. Three German officers and 19 soldiers were hanged to trees at one place to expiate the hanging of six Russian peasants. Received 12.20 a.m., 2nd. Rome, September 30. The Russian Ambassador states that the fleeing Austrian army has been surrounded near Dnkla. The Russians captured 500 automobiles and much ammunition and | food. The Russians defeated the Germans in the Suwalki district and j i occupied Augustovo.
