MEETING WITH SIR JOHN GORST. INTERVIEW WITH COI.ONAIL SECRETARY. Received 9.55 a.m., 28th. London, May 27. Hon. Thos. Mackenzie, High Commissioner for New Zealand, accompanied the Maoris on a visit to Sir John Gorst, who is recruiting at Margate. It was an affecting meeting with Tangikawa. whose father saved Sir John Gorst's life during the war.

Hon. Thos. Mackenzie today introduced the Maoris to Mr L. V. Harcourt, Colonial Secretary, who promised to assist in securing an audience with the King on the understanding that it was a purely courtesy call and no grievances were discussed.

Mr Mackenzie explained the constitutional position, and the Maoris now understand that Mr Harcourt and the King will receive them as the bearers of historic names.
