Marconi Scandals

STATEMENT IN HOUSE OF LORDS. LORD MURRAY EXPRESSES REGRET. Received 9.35 a.m., 18th. London, February 17. Viscount Murray, who as Master of Elibank was leading Whip of the Liberal party, after declaring all his Marconi transactions already disclosed, admitted an error of judgment in purchasing Americans on his own account through the company. He was not interested in Post Office contracts. The purchase for the Liberal paity was also, he admitted, an error of judgment, though he regarded it as a pure investment. His colleagues were not aware of the purchase. He did not inform Lord Allingworth, Liberal Whip, because owing to the scandal he preferred to bear the responsibility himself. He admitted his actions were not wise and expressed regret. Lord Ampthill's motion to set up a committee to inquire into Lord Murray's transactions was postponed at Lord Lansdowne's suggestion.
