Coiners as Spies
POLICE CONNIVANCE. Received 8.35 p.m., 13th. Pari?, January 13. A man and a woman- Pierre Jacob and Charlotte Unlet were charged jesterday at the Seine Assizes with coining. It was stated that for two years they had been employed by the police as spies amongst anarchists, being intimately acquainted with the notorious motor bandits. Jacob is supposed to have caused the arrest of Lacombe, who committed suicide at Chantilly Prison in April. The accused took up coining to allay suspicion, the police conniving. They called live police functionaries who admitted informing Jacob that the anarchists intended to take his life, owing to his supposed connection with the police. Jacob states that he was about to abandon his coinage implements when he was arrested. A LEAP TO DEATH. Lacombe was a notorious anarchist, who, while being tried on a charge of murdering Carter, a postmaster, committed suicide by jumping from the roof of Chantilly prison. Taking advantage of a warder's inattention, during a parade of the prisoners, l.acombe sealed a railing and ascended the roof. He held his pursuers at bay for two, hours, and when the tiro brigade arrived with scaling ladders, threw himself headlong to the ground, bis skull being' smashed.
