BURGLARS IN CHRISTCHURCH

The burglar scare in Christchurch and suburbs is increasing, further cases having been reported. On Tuesday night the residence of Mr Justice Denniston, at the corner of Gloucester Street and Rolleston Avenue, received attention. The servants heard the noise of someone climbing up the verandah. They rushed into the dining-room to call Mrs Denniston, but the person on the verandah, hearing the footsteps inside, made oil’. The police say this case was a ruse. On Tuesday afternoon a young woman in the house of Mr W. C. Nicholls, Mansfield Avenue, reported that she had discovered a strange man in one of the rooms. She rushed downstairs and gave an alarm, but the man got away. The police disbelieve this story. Burglars entered the premises of Mr J. N. Withers, storekeeper, at Southhrook, last night. They removed a large safe into the backyard, and pul it“ on a pony trap belonging to Withers.
