CABLEGRAMS.

United Press Association. By Electric Telegraph-Copyright

Sydney, June 3. A feature of the polling is the short shrift given to the Independent candidates, who are in practically every case badly out of the running. Though far from complete, the Senate figures aro beginning to take shape. In New South Wales, the Liberal three are leading, Sir Albert Gould with 117,888 votes, Mr Edward Milieu with 115,500, and Mr Charles Oakes with 114,637, the nearest Labour man being Mr John Grant with 106,875, with the Socialist bunch nowhere. In Victoria the Senate Labour candidates are leading, Mr L. J. Russell with 160,093, Mr John Barnes with 156,276, 'and Mr Andew McKissock with 155,8(0.). The nearest Liberal candidate is Dr. Salmon, with 146,751 votes.

In Queensland Labour is leading, Mr William Maughan with 25,964 votes, Mr John Mullan with 24,565, and Mr Myles Derricks with 24,506. The nearest Liberal is Mr Thomas Chalaway with 21,362.

in South Australia, Labour leads, Mr John Newlaud with 42,057 votes, Mr James O'Loughlin with 42,04.1, and Mr William Senior with 41,404, the nearest Liberal being Mr Joseph Vardon, with 30,310. Sir Josiah Symon, Independent Liberal, is well in the rear. In West Australia, Labour leads, Mr Pearce, Minister for Defence, with 24,995 votes, Mr Patrick Lynch with 24,138, and Mr Edward Needham with 24,116, the nearest Liberal being Mr William Butcher with 18,587. In Tasmania the Liberals are in the lead, Mr Thomas Bokhap with 24,631 votes, Mr John Keating with 24,605, and Mr John Clemens with 23,507, the nearest Labour candidate being Mr James Guy, with 23,220. Received 10.25 p.m., 3rd. Sydney, June 3. Today’s progressive returns have not affected the position of the parlies, though absentee votes have yet to bo counted. Almost every electorate is not regarded as likely to do more than vary to a more or less considerable extent the individual majorities already established. The Senate figures also tend to emphasise the position already notified with regard to referenda returns. Though they show a slight affirmative majority it is too unrepresentative vet for anv deductions to be made.
