MILKING SHORTHORN HERD BOOKS
We draw our readers’ attention to the meeting, which is to take place tomorrow, at 9.30 a.m., in the Old Borough Council Chambers, Hamilton. All interested in the dairy industry, and especially those who have a leaning to the Shorthorn, will recognise what the formation of a herd book from the milking strain will do for the breed and for the Dorninon. There are many very fine milking Shorthorns cows in the country: but there it is and always has been a difficulty to get sires from a recognised milking strain to mate them with. The lines on which it is proposed to start the herd book are that cows must produce a certain amount of butter fat per annum, and show the true typo and characteristics of the Shorthorn before admission. It is not intended that the males will be admitted into the herd book until they can trace their descent from cows that are already entered for perhaps several generations.
