A SHOCKING ACCIDENT
YOUNG MAN BADLY BURNT,
By Telegraph-Own Correspondent Paeroa, Last Night. A young man named David Sheehan had a miraculous escape from being blown to pieces on Saturday afternoon about 2 o’clock. He was driving in a sulky to his home on tire Te Aroha Road, and had with him a parcel of qlb of gunpowder, besides other parcels. On his wav home he had to pass through a lire which was burning by the loadside,and aspark alighting on the gunpowder soon caused an explosion. The unfortunate young man received a good deal of the force, and had his left leg. hand and side very badly burnt. His right hand was also severely burnt. The explosion ignited Ins clothes, and but for his pluck and presence of mind in jumping into a drain that was close at hand he would have been burnt to death. Seeing the sulky on lire he managed to save his goods, and also with some difficulty put lire fire out. After unharnessing the horse with one hand he walked over to the residence of Mr W. Emett, who rendered him first aid and took the sufferer home. Dr. Smith was called in and attended the unfortunate young man, who is progressing favourably.
