HAMILTON BUSINESS MEN'S LEAGUE.
To the Editor. Sir, —With reference to the report of the transactions of the Business Men’s League, which appeared in your issue of Saturday last, we regret that an entirely wrong construction has been placed on the remarks of one particular speaker when dealing with the matter of the proposed Frankton-Raglan railway. At a special meeting of the league convened of the purpose this morning the following resolution was unanimously adopted;--“ That Mr Grocott’s words, as reported in the Press, were entirely misconstrued, no mention having been made of Mr Bollard being connected with any mine and that the impression conveyed to the minds of those present was quite contrary to that gathered from the report.” In fairness to both Mr Bollard and to Mr Grocott we, the undersigned, are of the opinion that publicity should be given to the above resolution as the Press report conveys an entirely erroneous impression of what actually transpired at the meeting. On behalf of the Business Men’s League, (Signed) 1). A. MORTON, Chairman. G. H. SAMPLE, G. COURT, W. D. JAMIESON, H. N. FORSYTHE, Members. W. TAKLE, Acting Secretary. [We prefer to accept the unI biassed account of our reporter, who says the statement regarding Mr Bollard was made under the following circumstances: —Mr Grocott, who was on his feet addressing the meeting on the subject of the FranktonRaglan railway, said the proposal was not likely to meet with much D upport from either Messrs Young or Bollard, as the former was pledged to another route, and the latter had interested reasons. A member: He has shares in the coal company. Mr Grocott: Yes; that is it. To all intents and purposes Mr Grocott’s acquiescence in the interjection was equivalent to making the statement itself, and in the necessary process of condensation was employed in that way. Any attempt on his part therefore to evade responsibility is nased upon a quibble. Messrs W. D. Jamieson and H. N. Forsythe, whose names for some unexplained reason appear on the equivocal letter above, are both prepared to state that the reference io Mr Bollard and his shares was made at the meeting; but by whom they are not prepared to say.—Ed.W.A.j
