HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Hamilton Borough Council met last evening. There were present - His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. A. Young, and Crs. Atkin, Roche, ; Booth, Barton, Teddy, Fow, Tidd. ; Leave of absence was graned to Cr. I Manning. Gas Accounts. The Commissioner of Taxes wrote concerning the final accounts in connection with the Hamilton Gas Company. Received. Road Roller. The engineer of the Piako County Council asked the price of a road roller which the council at one time wished to sell. The clerk had repiled that it cost £114; it was still under oiler to the Huntly Town Board, hut the council would he pleased to receive an offer. Referred to the works committee. Saicyarda. A letter from the Health Dcparti ment drew attention to the insaniI tary condition of Ihe borough saleyards, and asked what the council proposed to do in tha matter. — Referred to the works committee for their report. Verandah. ! Messrs Pcthybridge and Fow j asked permission to erect a verandah | in front cf the mart in Collingwood j street. Granted. Building Permit. Messrs Ellis and Burnand wrote regretting the omission on the part of the contractors to apply f<"'_ !l building permit in connection with operations to the factory, anti apologising for the use of yellow pim’ in the same connection.--Received. Earth. Messrs limes and Co. asked perI mission to take 50 loads of earth from the hill opposite the town hall. -It was decided to allow the firm to take the spoil from Garden Place. Storm Water Mr W. J. Lake asked that something be done to prevent water rimring on liis property in Galloway street -Referred to the foreman of wo. ..a. i Gasworks. ' The manager of the gasworks en--1 closed a list of requisites in connec- ’ tion with the extension of operations, at a cost of £llO. —Agreed to. Fire Alarm the Simplex Heat and Damp 1 Detector Co., Christchurch, supplied details and estimates for the Simplex i tire alarm*. Referred to the gasworks committee.

Gillett’s Contract. Mr G. A. Gillctt, Epsom, wrote re deduction on account of contract extras on account for laying waterpipes, amounting to .fill, and asked for particulars. The engineer having reported adversely on the application, it was decided to inform Mr Gillett that it was a matter for settlement with the engineer. Water Supply. Mr Thos, Osborne, overseer Public Works Office, Auckland, applied for Uin water service for lire purposes at Hamilton Rost Office.—Agreed to. Old Chambers. The secretary of St. Andrew’s Bible Class asked re rental of the old borough council chambers for meeting purposes.--Referred to the works committee. Drivers’ Licenses. ,!. Thos. White applied for a license as driver of a motor ear, and J. W. Van Dyk made a similar application for a stage coach. Granted. A Heavy Claim. A claim for €IOOO was received from Messrs Bell, Gully, Boil, and Myers on behalf of Mr G. M. Fraser, contractor for the Hamilton traliic bridge, -The matter was referred to the council’s solicitor, with full power to act. By-laws. The borough solicitor forwarded amended cab by-laws. The borough solicitor also forwarded fresh draft of the inflammable material by-law. These matters wore deferred for the present. Footpath. Mr IT. R. Bain wrote asking for footpath improvements adjoining premises owned by him near Garden Place. -Referred to the works committee with power to act High Level Footpath. Mr J. W. Warren, architect, asked permission to erect a high level footoath along Marlborough Place frontage, where he was about to erect a two storey building for Mr Herbert Smith. -Referred to the works committee with power to act.

It was decided to lake proceeding against the person or persons whs have recently removed gravel from the pit at the sanitary depot. Eire Stations. On the motion of Gr. Roche the works committee were asked to inspect and report upon sites for lire stations.in Hamilton East and West. The Pound. Gr. Atkin, in accordance with notice given, moved “That the resolution of 251h May, 1911, dealing with the pound be rescinded, and that the question be referred back to the works committee for reconsideration, in order that another site may be chosen. The motion was carried. Reorganisation of ;4tali’. The committee appointed to consider this question recommended: That the control of the waterworks department he placed under Mr Blackman, gasworks manager, as from June Ist, at a total salary of £250. ’liiiit an adjustment of wages of waterworks employees be left to Mr Hackman to deal with. That the council appoint, at a salary of £IOO per annum, a consulting engineer, whose duties shall be to advise and carry out all engineering works which arc a charge on the district fund account, discharge all duties as engineer under the bylaws, and see that the bylaws in respect to buildings and sanitation are observed. All services required to be done as at licensed surveyor, ,to be paid for a

schedule rates over and above the salary of £IOO. Duties not to include the supervision of expenditure out of loans and water supply and gasworks revenues.

That applications be invited for the combined position of town hall caretaker, collector (under town clerk) and building inspector, at a salary of £2 Ids per week. That the office of borough foreman be converted into that of foreman and overseer of works at a wage of £8 per week. That the salary of the town clerk be £2GO per year, to date from June Ist, 1911.

That in view of the special services rendered by the town clerk in connection with the purchase of the gasworks during the past year, he be voted a bonus of £4O. That the dog registrar be given a week’s notice of the termination of his appointment with the council. That applications be invited for position of ting registrar, ranger and poundkeeper, at a wage of 20a per week, plus pound fees, all fees for dog collars to be the property of the council. The report was adopted with the exception of that portion giving Mr Blackman power to arrange wages and fix hours, lie will be asked to report to the council. Works Committee Report. Jhe works committee recommended ; That Clarence street be improved and metalled, and the matter left in the hands of borough foreman to | attend to, and carry out. i That pipes of culvert opposite gas--1 vurks he taken on to the fence. That the storm water drains | through private sections in Pembroke street. taking water from Ruakiwi road, Clarence and Pembroke streets, he cleaned out at an early date. That the culvert under Pembroke street have a sump put in on the west aide, and that the road formation he widened at this spot by taking earth from road and section 327 a, and tilling in. This work to be carried out in ihe spring or summer, but in the meantime the borough foreman merely keep the footpath and road in repairs. Pumping Station. Recommended that the foreman be authorised to do the necessary work on the Pumping Station road.
