Affray at Taihape.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Taihape, Last Night. A sensational affair occurred at Jhuhu last night. It appears that .wo men named Garlick, a labourer, iged 25, and Chatfield, a married nan, rode to Taihape yesterday, reluming late in the afternoon. They ividently quarrelled and got off their lorses. Chatfield was thrown over i bank, and narrowly escaped falling nto the river, when death would iave been certain. Fortunately, he anded on the verge of the cliff, and ,vas found subsequently in a dazed condition. The ether man rode off, ending Chatfield’s horse, and made for Chatfield’a house, where it is alleged he seized a carving knife, and threatened to do for the rest of the family. Fortunately a man named Oliver was present, and after a desperate struggle lie secured the knife. Garick, it is alleged, then whipped out a jack knife, and renewed the fray, but. was again disarmed. Then Garlick jumped into a two horse dray, drove :o his lodgings, and having secured a oaded gun, returned, and threatened to shoot anyone who interfered with rim. lie tried to induce some spec:ators to go with him to show where Chatfield was. They declined. Then ic asked for Mrs Chatfield, and being cold she had gone, said; “I’ll go too, then.” The gun went off, and Garlick fell out of his cart wounded in the left arm, chest, and shoulder. The police and a doctor were summoned, and Garlick’s injuries were attended to. This morning the man was conveyed to the Wanganui Hospital.
