The Finance Bill.
London, July 30. Discussing the Finance Bill in the House of Lords, Viscount St. Aldwyn, formerly Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, attributed the low price of consols to the Government's attack on property. He complained that the Government displayed no financial foresight or prudence. Earl Crewe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, said the Government thought indirect taxation was quite high enough. The country was quite able to pay for its defensive services without melodramatic taxation. The Finance Bill has been read a second time in the House of Lords, and business in connection with (Supply has concluded in the House of Commons.
