Hockey.

WAIKATO v. ELLERSLIE. With the weather conditions all that could be desired and the playing field in good condition, the first representative team under the newly formed Waikato Hockey Association met and defeated a team from Ellerslic. The visiting team were met by Mr K. English, secretary of the Association, and Messrs J. H. Luxford and H. A. Swarbrick, and were driven to the Hamilton Hotel, where an excellent dinner was provided by Host Hooper. After dinner, they were driven to Steele Park, where the match was played. The Ellerslie team played in red and white, while Waikato wore green and black. Mr Cunningham captained the visiting team, and Mr Hooper the local men. From the "bully off" Waikato became aggressive and attacked strongly ; but the defence was good, and it was not until give and take play ensued for a time, that the local forwards broke away and centreing at the right moment Rice pilotted the ball through the posts. The visitors then made a .determined effort to equalise matters; but the local backs were playing well, especially the half line. They nipped most of the attacks in the bud, and sent the ball along to their own forwards. Waikato many times attacked strongly, but over eagerness saw no score result. Ellerslie in turn attacked; but Lee, the Waikato goal keeper, saved a couple of very hot shots. Waika to then asserted themselves and Simpson and Rice each scored goals. The spell ended Waikato 3, Ellerslie 0. From the bully off the greens set up a series of hot attacks but no score resulted. Soon afterwards the Ellerslie forwards broke away and a beautiful passing rush ended in their "inside right" notching a goal. After this Waikato put up two more goals through Rice and Mackenzie. With the ball travelling up and down at a great pace the two teams were playing their hardest, and soon after this the whistle sounded, and the game ended Waikato 5 Ellerslie 1 MORRINSVILLE v. WAIHOU. The local ladies club journeyed to Waihou on Wednesday and played the return match with the Waihou Ladies Hockey Club and were defeated by three goals to one.
