Ohinemuri River Tailings.
For many years past there have been frequent complaints of the damage caused by the silting up of the Ohinemuri' River as a result of the ; large amount of tailings deposiited there by the various mining companies. An offer has now been made to the Government to remove one million tons within seven years, provided that a subsidy of £ for £ is paid. Mr Kingswell, writing on behalf of the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Co., states that it has an available working capital of £30,000, and is prepared to remove tailings from the Ohinemuri River, en condition that the Government subsidise this company £ for £ up to £30,000 for the building of plant and purchase of land for the same, and for a tailing site at or near Paeroa, which, with the plant already erected at Waihi, at a cost of about £IO,OOO, will be capable of dealing with not less than 750 tons per day of river tailings, which will be reground to slime, and re-treated by most up-to-date metallurgical methods. The company will undertake to deposit the residue on suitable sites of land, to be obtained by it at Paeroa, but at Waihi the Government will require to set aside 150 acres or thereabouts of what is now worthless Crown lands on the south side of the Ohinemuri River. The company undertakes to remove from the river not less than 200,000 tons of material each year, or a total of 1,000,000 tons within a period of seven years.
