The Trades and Labour Council decided to recommend that old age pensions be increased to 12s 6d per week, and that all persons rendered incapable of earning their living either from accident, sickness, or natural infirmities should be entitled to a pension regardless of age limit. During the examination of a witness called in one of the Jury Courts at Sydney it transpired that the man was out on strike. He said that he had been "out" for a period of nine months. "Nine months?" questioned the presiding judge. "Yes," replied the witness. "And have you done no work in the interval?" asked His Honor. The man replied in the negative, but added that he was in receipt of £1 per week strike pay. His Honor inquired how he had managed to keep his family on that sum. "I've no family, only a wife," said the witness. "What wages were you earning?" said His Honor. "I suppose on an average £3 per week," said the witness. "Well, I'm glad you could afford to lose it, "responded the judge. Further questions put to the witness elicited the fact that about 50 persons had come out at the time of the strike, which occurred at a hat factory. Only nine of these now remained in Sydney, the remainder had gone to Victoria and obtained employment there. "But the factory still goes on," commented one of the counsel in the case. "And so does the strike," grimly responded the witness. Mrs B. L.Lapish, New Sandgateßoad Brisbane, Q., writes: "I had a severe attack of influenza this winter, and it settled in my knees, giving me such severe pains that I could hardly bear them. I decided to try Chamberlain's Pain Balm, and am more than pleased with it, for after giving my knees one good rubbing the pain left me and I have not been troubled since. Several of my friends have used Chamberlain's Pain Balm for cuts, bruises and burns on my recommendation, and they are all well pleased with the result." For sale by all chemists and storekeepers.
