Huntly Rod and Gun Club.

The annual meeting of the Huntly Rod and Gun Club was held in the Volunteer Hall on Friday evening, Captain Elliot presiding. The annual report as adopted was read, the allocation of the yearling trout and fry in the Waikato, in the neighbouring creeks, and in the surrounding lakes, being generally approved, while the erection and stocking of a fairly large fish-pond on Mr G. Clinch’s property at Kimihra, and the contemplated erection of another couple of ponds was regarded as a step in the right direction; while the generosity of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society in placing so many fry and yearlings at the disposal of the club was highly appreciated and acknowledged. Owing to the steps taken by the club, the dynamiting of fish, which was prevalent two seasons ago, had been almost put an end to, though isolated and suspicious cases occurring last season had been investigated without result. The balance-sheet, which showed a small amount in hand, was approved as read. Office-bearers for the current year was elected as follow: —President, Captain Elliot; vice-president, Mr F. H. Exon; secretary and treasurer, Mr John Hughes; committee, Messrs E. Clinch, A. Crowder, W. Ellison, Alex. McKinnon, J. 11. Nicholls, William Parker, and Redshaw, with power to add to their number. The president of the Auckland Society was elected honorary president of the club, while as a recognition of his services Mr G. Clinch, who undertook the management of the fish-ponds, was elected as honor avy mc m b er. Reports showed that the yearlings placed last season in lakes Hakanoa and Kimihia were doing well, more especially in the former, where, early in the morning, trout could be seen disporting themselves all over its surface. Jn the river, too, they appeared to be more numerous than in former years, so that by adopting measures for keeping up the supply of and rearing the fry, there was every prospect of great sport in the future.

A letter was read from the late secretary, Mr C. Richards, J.P., resigning his position. The resignation was received with considerable regret, and a vote of thanks for his efficient services; was unanimously passed. The Chairman slated that (here was every prospect of the Assets Board’s property south of Murrinsvillc being cut up for close settlement, and the Maori block of 10,000 acres on the. opposite bank of the i’iakonui would also be disposed of. With an influx of farmers the deer which exist there in great numbers, would soon become extinct. The country to the* east of bluntly being admirably adapted for deer, and several settlers having promised to do all they could to preserve any that might be put there, he moved that the secretary approach the Auckland Society on the matter, and enquire if two bucks and four does could be procured. The motion was carried unanimously.

A suggestion to the effect that efforts be made to promote joint action on the part of the various societies in the Waikato re the stocking of fish and game was deferred for future consideration.
